Our Day trip

by Howard
(Benoni South Africa)

On Saturday 7th August 2010, my family and I took a day trip to the Pilanesburg. The exercise was to try out my new Nikon D5000 camera and various lenses – hmmm, still so much to learn J

Leaving home at 04h30 to ensure we reach Bakubang gate at 06h30, thus getting a full day in the reserve. What a day we had as well. Our first sighting was a lone Elephant Bull – a very angry one at that. He had a temper tantrum or two, charging at us. Reverse gear on an Isuzu 4x2 works well, we can vouch for that one.

We saw so many different species of animals. From a beautiful silver backed jackel (photo included), to wilderbeest, springbok and impala, zebra’s, water buck, hippo’s, squirrels, vervet monkeys, crimson breasted shrike, hornbills, crocodiles, rhino’s, dassies to name just a few. The encounter that made one go Aaahhh, was a family of elephants, lead by a huge bull, possibly two females and a vast age group of youngers, the baby of the group a mere few days old (photo included) – that was a precious encounter. All in all, a wonderful outing enjoyed by all. Tried to book in at Bakgatla for a long weekend, but sadly all is fully booked! Our country has so much to offer us, doesn’t it? We’ll be back again, hopefully sooner rather than later …….
