Lioness hunting blue wildebeest

by Dustin Van Helsdingen
(Rustenburg)

Friday, 3 April 2015, my wife, son and I have been spending time in Pilanesberg National Park since 06:00. The morning provided us with special sightings including the famous Amarula (bull elephant) and a lion pride which included two males, two females and two cubs at Rathlogo Dam hide.

At around 15:00 we were driving towards Thlware Loop and on our way there, I decided to take a detour through Hippo Loop next to Mankwe Dam. What a decision this turned out to be........
At first I only saw the herd of blue wildebeest and just as we were about to leave; movement and silhouette in grass right in front of us. A lioness stalking the herd and only her ears sticking out. I got ready with my camera while my wife got ready to take a video (with cellphone). Our hearts were racing in anticipation of what was about to happen.
Like a bullet she jumped and ran towards the herd, in a matter of seconds the experience was something of the past.
She was unsuccessful in the end, but it was still an unforgettable experience, during which I managed to get some great photos like this one.

The lake makes the image

It's so nice seeing the water in the background instead of just grass.

"It's 768 pages of the most amazing information. It consists of, well, everything really. Photography info...area info...hidden roads..special places....what they have seen almost road by road. Where to stay just outside the Park...camp information.
